The month of May is officially declared Community Living Timmins by Mayor Tom Laughren. Community Living Timmins is now celebrating its annual Community Living Month with the theme, “Kids Belong Together”, both a celebration of successes and a gentle reminder to include children with an intellectual disability in the classroom, the school, and the community as a whole. “Being included” is feeling you belong.
People who have a disability need to be able to count on getting the support and encouragement they require so they can take part and contribute. It is important for kids to grow up together so they can learn that everyone belongs.
Along with tv, radio, and newspaper coverage, Community Living Timmins partnered with Wendy’s Restaurant and for the month of May they will be distributing Community Living Timmins placemats on their trays. The beautiful pictures are winners from our local Elementary School coloring contest and our local High School drawing contest.
The theme “Kids Belong Together”, calls us all to reflect on our own attitudes and practices, not just with children, but with adults as well. It calls us to ask the questions, “How can we as a community support inclusion to help make everyone feel they belong?” and “How can we as individuals help make this happen?”
