I want to volunteer but what can I do?
Here are some ways that you can get involved and make a difference in someone’s life.
Volunteer
- Provide one-to-one friendship and support
- Help with special events or weekly activities
- Become a member
- Apply your professional skills to the work of a committee or board of directors
Volunteer as a youth
Be a friend, mentor or peer tutor to someone at your school or in your community. Check with the student services department or special education resource teacher at your high school, college or university to learn how to become involved. You can also check out the Best Buddies Canada website at www.bestbuddies.ca for ideas.
Learn and Share
Even if you can’t volunteer your time, you can still help. Become informed about the issues affecting people who are labelled as having an intellectual disability and tell your friends and family what you have learned. Remember that all people have the ability to be good friends, neighbours and employees. Encourage others to give people a chance to demonstrate their skills and abilities.
Volunteers will Experience
- an environment that is friendly and welcoming
- an opportunity to share ideas and skills
- proper orientation and training to placement and position
- adequate support and direction
- the opportunity to make positive personal connections
- the opportunity to be heard, make decisions, and be respected
- the opportunity to decline a suggested placement
- recognition for work well done
- community hours for high school students
