“As a parent of a child who suffers with a mental health illness, you already feel such a tremendous amount of guilt,” said Courville, who speaks from lived experience. “You’re always trying to second guess what you could have done differently. Did you cause this? Was this something that you did? Was it your parenting style? And unfortunately, society has those same questions and it ends up feeling like they’re blaming the parent.”
Parents for Children’s Mental Health is a peer support group for parents and families with children afflicted by a wide range of challenges including depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mood disorders, autism or behaviour arising from substance abuse.
